Tips on Shopping for Music Gear

August 29th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

Shopping for music gear can prove to be quite fun as well as confusing. Numerous shops are there which sell good musical instruments. The range of products and the brands are so many that it really becomes confusing for a beginner to understand and find out the suitable instrument, which will serve his purpose and be cost effective at the same time. So, while thinking of shopping for music gear, one may follow these guidelines to avoid unnecessary harassments.

The one point of advice given by every professional player is to buy the very best quality one can afford the first time. Playability and dependability are the measures of quality, and there are no shortcuts. In the highly competitive market of musical instruments, the only way to make it less expensive is to use cheaper materials, cheaper parts and cheaper labor. That might not prove its worth.

While shopping for music gear it is very important to check the warranty of the product. A manufacturer who only guarantees workmanship and materials for five or ten years probably expects problems to occur after the warranty period. Craftsmanship is an important element in the future value of an instrument. Areas that require special skills, such as binding, finishing, hand shaping and inlay work, are ever more costly and will enhance the value of the instrument in future.

Manufacturing processes require repeatable precision and are more cost efficient when performed by automated machinery. A resale value for the instrument is also important even if you never sell the instrument. Checking out the brands or the manufacturers of the particular instruments might take a little bit of exploration and research. But it is worth spending the time when shopping for a music gear. A good music gear can remain for a lifetime. Some branded instruments may be high priced but they also assure the best quality and guarantee of the products.

Online Shopping

In recent years ample online shops have grown which sells music gear. Some are large, some are small, and some are portals, which provide everything related to music. These sites offer various musical instruments of various brands. Some online sites also auction the instruments to the highest bidder. Online shopping gives one ample choices of brands, models, features and versions. Buyers can choose from a wide range of products as well as get the desired instrument at his favorite price.

Few Cautions for Online Shopping

The boost of online shopping stores increases the number of frauds. Internet frauds are quite rampant and anyone can fall in the traps of fraud stores who would take the money and vanish for never to return. Since many of these fraud sites owners do not accept credit card payments they also become impossible to trace. So, buyers should only pay through credit cards while paying for an instrument online and not use any other mode of payment.

Another drawback of shopping online is that there is no option for checking out the instrument personally. For example if someone is buying a drum set he would like to play it to check the sound, timbre effects and few other things. It cannot be done while shopping online. One can only read the details, which are provided, with each instrument, or simply ask questions about the products. If the answers are suitable the prospective buyers may decide to buy the thing.

Music Gear for The Composer

August 29th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

Music composers of the latest generation are no longer limited to just a keyboard, mixer, or specialty synthesizer to compose. Today a variety of gears is available in the market for composers to compose and program their music piece. However, as a composer of music one should remember that the music gear does not produce the music, you do.

The latest music gear for composers that are available on the market are friendlier than ever and easier to play. In modern keyboards the composer will find hundreds, even thousands of instruments all tweaked and ready for their specific applications. The music composer that is looking for drum beats can easily choose from a variety of Techno, rhythm and blues, Hip Hop, Country, Orchestral. They are all stored there in the sound bank ready on the press of GO.

Earlier in the days when the musicians used midi, they had to work very hard to get these sounds. Today the modern sound gears not only make the work easier but also produce great sound quality. Today, the gears are quieter and possess no hisses and hums. At the same time they usually have good support online with free patches and even operating systems which can be easily downloaded by the musician. The latest music gear is more reliable than the older gear.

For the first time, musicians can stop worrying about power supplies dying and battery backed Ram failing. Most manufacturers now produce gears that go through the process of more than two decades of research and development. The effort really shows.

However, composers should remember that high end gears require high end backup gear. Those musicians who are tight on the budget should keep that in mind. If you have invested in an expensive condenser microphone you cannot get away with a low quality pre-amp.

However, the recent few years have brought such tremendous advances to sound quality that the heavy line between pro gear and home gear is getting thinner. To get to higher sound quality you must have great pre-amps, converters, monitors, good microphones and an excellent sounding room.

As a music composer you can also face input output disasters with your music gear that can leave you irritated. You can avoid all these by just knowing what you have and where you actually are having the problem.

The next step is to identify your goals. If you have a two input sound card and want to record the whole band where everyone has a track,. as a music composer you may think it is not possible. You go ahead and invest in a twenty-four track mixer only to realize that it too has only two inputs only.

The point is to simply observe what you are paying for and know your gears well. You may have a keyboard with a sampler in-built. Be aware of the features that your gears have.

Music Gear For the Beginners

Why is it so important to know about the musical instruments and gear? What is the need of studying organology or knowing about it? Musical instruments and gear are devices that are created to produce music. So, without a proper knowledge on the basics of music gear and instruments, it is almost impossible to compose good music. Organology, a stream of much popular fine arts study, is in fact the academic study of musical instruments.

Product and Market Research

In the market there are a large number of products and gear and there are quite a few manufacturers who are making them. So the first option for the music gear for beginners is to do a thorough research on the instruments of choice.

Source of Knowledge

One of the primary sources, which you can consult, is your next door music expert. A person who knows a lot about instruments and gear can help a lot in deciding the appropriate music gear for the beginners.

The second source is the internet. If you spend at least good couple of hours you can get a sound knowledge on the instrument of your choice. There are customer product reviews, ratings, and problems at your mouse tip. You also have the option of posting your questions that will be answered by some expert in the field. You can also ask and mail the renowned and good musicians and ask them to help in your difficulty.

Budget of Music Gear for the Beginners

The first consideration should always be the budget. If possible you should first go for the first hand products. Music gear are costly so the second thing, which you have to understand, is whether you will invest your hard earned money in a first hand product or a second hand product. If bought properly second hand music gear can also be quite handy in learning the basics.

How Second hand Gears can help you?

Good quality music gear can be bought at a much lower price than the first hand one, with very little value difference. The hitch is you do not have the guarantee, unless it is almost new.

If the buy is from a garage sale, then you can meet the owner and ask him the reasons for selling it and the how old the instrument is to understand its functioning status. If it is an online store then the place should have customer ratings given to it. This would cover the reliability feature of the shop.

If it is possible you can also consult the help of someone, who knows a lot about instruments and musical gear. If you can take him to the store then it will also help your cause a fair deal.

The value for money is another concern in getting music gear for the beginners. There is no reason to pay more for a product, which does not worth it. You must have the knowledge of the first hand price. You should visit a number of stores and compare their prices before investing. You can also have a talk with the insurance company as that would help you in case of any tampering or damage in shipping.

Some Useful Tips for Tuning the Music Gear

August 29th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

In musical parlance tuning refers to two types of tuning methods. One is the tuning practice, which is the applying procedures of tuning an instrument, its gear or the voice. The other one is the tuning of the music systems.

The question that comes to the mind is why do we need tuning of music gear? Tuning is a process through which certain pitches are built up in relation with each other. The matching is done in tandem. For certain times they cross each other and at other times they complement the other one, at periodic intervals. When a pitch is too high or near too inaudible with respect to the others, we call it out of tune.

Out of tune is also called when the pitch does not match a standard, such as a concert A 440. For a wind musical gear like pipe, flute or any bass instruments, modifying the length or width can adjust the pitch.

Guitar is a string instrument. Tuning of music gear like guitars are also different. So, the tuning done to adjust the pitch is also different. There are adjustable pegs on the head of the guitar. Turning them will increase or decrease the tension of the strings, which in turn will change the tuning. This holds true for, almost, all of the string instruments and the gear.

Tuning the music gear is done with voice also. This process is known as matching pitch. This is considered to be one of the basics of the ear tunings.

Along with the harmonic gear, there are some inharmonic instruments also. The type with which the tuning is applied also determines the complexity. A brass instrument like bell is an intricate instrument to tune.

A simple way of tuning the music gear is to start sounding the two pitches and then tinkering with the one to match with the other one. For this purpose a tuning fork is used as a reference device. There are electronic tuning devices also which help in deciding the right tune for the gear.

Accuracy of the tuning of the music gear is sometimes measured by the interference beats. When the two working pitches are going on side by side and moving towards a harmonic relationship the frequency of the beating is decreased. The apt way to tune an octave or unison is to lessen the beating frequency till it cannot be noticed. The type of tuning system determines in case of other intervals.

In tuning the music gears for strings, which are not tuned to unison, harmonics can be used.

Only one pitch is used as a reference pitch to tune a gear or instrument. For a string instrument only one string is tuned first, then it becomes the reference pitch to tune the others. In case of guitar, the lowest string is tuned to E; the successive ones are done next.

In the 16th century, the Italian musicians first used unconventional tunings or scordatura. The main uses were to facilitate difficult passages in tuning of gear, reinforce tonalities by using the open strings, and also extending the range of the instruments.

There are times when a musical instrument or gear is intentionally pitched lower during tuning. This process of tuning the music gears is called down tuned.

Protecting Your Music Gear In Desert

August 29th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

If you are a musician, then you must be passionate about your music gear. Your passion can even make you take your gear along with you to the deserts. But have you given a thought that whenever you play outside, your gear will be damaged to some extent? If you tend to play outside, then you must follow some basic precautions. And protecting the music gears will be easy, if you follow them.

First, let us take a look at how your music gear can get damaged.

If you want to play in a desert, then the damage will be maximum. No wonder that doing a desert show is tremendous fun and romantic too. The sand dunes, the clear blue sky, a whole lot of empty spaces around are pretty much fascinating for a musician. And the sounds will be better there because the external noise is far less there than in a city or even in an auditorium.

But reality is stranger than romanticism. The desert dust will damage your gears dangerously. Your external cables will turn to brown or grayish brown.

The dust of the desert is so dangerous that even if you use a steel case for your gears, it will still affect them. What you can do to prevent this problem is that you can just use some clear and standard packing tape. And then just seal the seam of your case with those tapes. But before tying the tape, just wipe out all the dusts from the seam of your case.

You can apply other tactics also for protecting the music gears. You can just use two cases for your gears. That means wrap your gears with a case and then put it in the steel case. If you do this then the dust will not be able to pass the second case and in that way it cannot harm the gear inside. For the inside case you can use any material. Large pillowcase, plastic garbage bags, etc. can be used. But just make sure that the gear fits properly in the case.

If you are doing a show in desert, then stay alert of the sand storms. It can mess up your gears. Just make a tent, where you can keep them. This can be a good way of preventing the music gears.

Before the sunrise the gears become very cold. The sun here gives birth to a warm wind that can create a condensation after coming in touch with the cold gears. The condensation can create moisture that can turn the thin layer of dust into thin layer of mud.

But problems do not only arise in deserts. Even if you play in a city, the gear damage problems are not completely eliminated. The pollution of the city can damage the music gear. Preventing the music gears is not that much tough. Just take good care of your gears. Do not just leave them anywhere. Keep it in a safe place. Keep them out of the reach of children.

Another very important way of protecting the music gears is insuring them. Proper insurance can fund you to get you gear repaired in case of damage.

All the equipments, which are necessary for music, are called music gear. Music gear again can be of two types. Some of them are acoustic and some of them are electronic. In this article, we will talk about the electronic music gear.

Electronic music gears are the ones that work electrically. All the electronic instruments, like, electric guitars, synthesizers, octo pads are kind of electronic music gears. But they are not all. Amplifiers, microphones, tools that are used in sound studios also fall in this category.

Here is a small description of different electronic music gears:

Electric guitar

It is a very important music gear. This instrument has a pick up. Once you plug in the instrument with the amplifier, you will get a perfect sound, actually electric guitar do not have any unplugged sound like the acoustic guitar. It has got a completely different sound. It has a sound, which is metallic. But you can make an acoustic tone in an electric guitar with the help of a processor. You need the pick up and the amplifier to produce its sound.

Synthesizer

Synthesizer is a complete electronic gear. It does not have any acoustic version. You need the electricity to run this instrument. Synthesizer does not have any sound of its own. It only copies the sound of other instruments and delivers that particular sound.

Octopads

Octopads are the electrical version of drums. They are small, easy to handle and are able to change its tone. The best thing about them is that as they are small and the player does not need to take along many percussion instruments with him. Many of those effects are available in the instrument.

Amplifiers

These are very important electronic music gear, without which not a single professional music show can be staged. Amplifiers are the one, which deliver the sound of all instruments and vocal and make the sound reach to audience in every corner.

Microphones

Microphones and amplifiers are very much interrelated. Microphones are a special kind of gear that enhance the sound and tone of the vocalists and instruments. Actually, microphone captures the sound and sends that to the audience. This is almost like the amplifiers. But the amplifier cannot capture the sound directly. It comes from the microphone. It just delivers the sound.

Processor

This particular gadget is mainly used with the guitar. Processor is a box where different tones and effects are stored. If you attach it with the guitar, then the guitarist will be able to choose those tones and effects from the processor and can play it in his guitar.

Electronic music gear is very sensitive. They need to be taken care of properly. And as they are expensive, their insurance is surely needed. These gears have a complicated handling process. Before using them, one should understand all the handling properly. For this the manuals should be read.

Indeed electric gears are very interesting. By using them, you can change the whole approach of the music. If you are a music lover, then you will not be able to stop yourself from getting fond of electronic music gears.

Categories of Music Gear

August 29th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

Categories of music gear encompass under them a wide range of musical instruments and equipment. There are a lot of categories and sub categories of music gear. They can be classified based upon the usage or based upon the mechanisms.

The two main categories that they can be classified into are acoustic and electronic. The gears that do not need any external electrical help are called acoustic music gears. Any acoustic instrument is a part of this category. The gears that are electricity supported are called electrical music gears.

Acoustic music gear

This category of music gear includes mostly the instruments and equipment in their original versions. Acoustic music gear do not need any external electrical help. Very good instances of this category of music gear are acoustic guitar, acoustic drums, violin, flute or any other acoustic instrument.

But the most interesting factor about acoustic music gear is that some of them can be used as electronic gear. You can take acoustic guitar for instance. If you add a pick up with the acoustic guitar, then it can be played electrically. Then the sound of this guitar can be deviated into the amplifiers. That means the sound will be heard from the amplifier.

But do not think that by adding a pick up you can use the acoustic guitar just like an electric guitar. That is not possible. Pick-ups just pave the way to the amplification of the sound. It cannot change the tone or the effect. Do not mix up acoustic guitar with the electric guitar. Though both of them are guitars and their playing style is the same, that does not mean that they are the same. They are widely different in many aspects.

Electronic music gear

This is one of the most important categories of music gear. Electronic music gear is totally different from the acoustic ones. This category of gear cannot be used without electricity. Electric guitar, synthesizer, and octopad fall in this category. Apart from them there are other kinds of electronic gear also. There are microphones, amplifiers, processors and pedals.

Though some of the acoustic instruments can be played electrically, no electrical instrument can be played acoustically. Electric connection is necessary for all of them.

The most important accessories of any musical instrument are amplifiers and microphones. The amplifier and microphone are almost the same. They enhance the sound of the instrument and vocal. The microphone collects the sound and carries it to the audience. But the amplifier just spreads the sound. They cannot collect them. To collect, you need a microphone.

While talking about electronic music gear, one cannot forget to mention the processor. The processor is a tiny gadget that consists of a whole lot of brilliant effects and tones. If you connect your guitar with this gadget, then you will be able to use all these tones and effects. There are some good quality processors available these days that provide you some more facilities like mixing two of the existing tones and making a new tone of your own.

August 29th, 2011 | Uncategorized | No Comments »

Music is the part and parcel of our life. It makes our life rhythmic and melodious and at the same time it entertains us a lot. There are wide varieties of music gear found that vary according to several factors like culture, geographical location, life style etc. These factors also determine the genre or the trends of music.

While choosing music gear we can follow some simple ways that will help us to overcome difficulties in choosing them. Before choosing any music gear one should have a good exposure of different musical instruments and gear like strings, woodwinds and percussion. Added to this the concerned person should also have a clear and precise idea that for which purpose the instrument or gear is being used.

Listening to the timbres of different musical instruments and different musical pieces and styles in which they are featured will help in chalking out the plan more clearly and effectively. One interesting but important fact that one should keep in mind while choosing a music gear is the physical features of the person who is going to use them. This may sound funny but it is serious because certain musical gears require special or strong health while playing the gears. This point will can be explained with this example. Sousaphone may become too heavy or too large for a petite person. Those who suffer from breathing problems should not play flute. While some gear or instruments may require longer fingers or certain facial dexterity.

Consulting a professional musician or a music instructor is a good idea because they will be able to identify the potentiality of the person concerned. Not only this, these professionals will also help in understanding facial, physical and not to mention personal characteristic also that will help tremendously in the choice of the music gear or instrument.

Budget is also an important factor while you choose a music gear. Some instruments like the French horn, tuba, bassoon etc. may be very expensive. On the other hand school instrumental gear come in bit low price. It is better to try few music gears by borrowing them from friends, relatives or acquaintance. This will help decide whether you have the aptitude or not.

While buying music gears one should keep in mind the life style factors too. If you are a person who is on constant move or has very little space in apartment then a grand piano will not be a good choice.

Keeping the social aspect point of view in mind is also a good idea because if you want to participate in various local bands with orchestral instruments then from this point of view the idea of choosing a piano would be rather isolating.

So, while choosing music gear the above-mentioned points can help both the beginners and the starters how to go step by step. But one thing should always be kept in mind that music is something that comes straight from the heart and should not be imposed on someone forcibly.
